Memorial farewells Menin Gate lions and painting for overseas loan

On 5 September 2014, the Australian War Memorial said a fond farewell to the Menin Gate lions and the painting Menin gate at midnight as they are taken off display in preparation for their loan to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Dr Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial, was instrumental in arranging the loan to the Canadian War Museum for its First World War centenary exhibition The iron harvest.

Michael Zavros portraits of Ben Roberts-Smith go on display

Two portraits of Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG have been added to the Australian War Memorial’s collection.

The portraits, unveiled today, were painted by renowned Australian artist Michael Zavros. They represent two different views of Roberts-Smith: one in his formal uniform, the other larger than life-size in combat stance.

Zavros said he was honoured to receive the commission from the Australian War Memorial and to spend time with such a remarkable person as Roberts-Smith, who is a much admired and heroic figure for many Australians.

Australian War Memorial launches Roll of Honour Soundscape Project

The voices of primary school students will resonate throughout the Australian War Memorial’s First World War Roll of Honour cloisters over the next four years as part of a project launched today at the Memorial.

The Roll of Honour Soundscape project was launched today by the Prime Minister, the Hon. Tony Abbott MP, to mark the centenary of the declaration of the First World War.

Memorial hosts international ceremony to mark 100 years since declaration of First World War

The Australian War Memorial marked the centenary of the declaration of the First World War today with a Last Post Ceremony attended by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson, and a contingent of ambassadors and high commissioners.

The Director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson, encouraged all Australians to reflect on how far the world has come since the First World War.

Australian War Memorial official war artists Ben Quilty and Shaun Gladwell exhibit together for the first time

The Director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson, will on Friday night open an exhibition by official war artists Ben Quilty and Shaun Gladwell at the John Curtin Gallery in Perth, Western Australia.

It is the first time Ben Quilty’s: after Afghanistan and Shaun Gladwell: Afghanistan have been exhibited together in the one venue.
