Memorial to archive Anzac Day Tweets

2 mins read

The Australian War Memorial has joined with Twitter to call on Australians around the country to record their own Anzac Day commemorations and events for inclusion in its national collection.

On Anzac Day, Saturday 25 April 2015, the Memorial will be encouraging people to use the hashtag #AnzacDay to post their Tweets of commemorative events and activities from their own communities.  In partnership with Twitter, the Memorial will collect the Tweets as a record of how people commemorated the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli.

Memorial Director, Dr Brendan Nelson, said the Memorial is always looking for new ways to deepen our understanding of those who have served our nation.

“We are proud to mark the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli landings by collecting Tweets which show how this significant anniversary was commemorated”, Dr Brendan Nelson said.

“The ways in which people commemorate the Centenary will contribute to the ongoing story of Anzac Day and Australia’s history. This project allows people everywhere, in Australia and overseas, to record and share their Anzac Day experience, and contribute to the record of how this important day in our history was marked.

“The collection of Tweets will be preserved and will form part of the Memorial’s collection, to ensure researchers in future generations get a glimpse of what Australians did to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.”

The Memorial is asking people to Tweet photos and videos of marches, ceremonies, services and other community events, large and small; photos of people, of orders of service, of memorials and honour boards, of communities taking a moment to stop and reflect on Anzac Day.  As the Tweets will be added to the collection, this is a way for Australians to make their mark on history.

The best way to be part of this project is to simply share a Tweet with a photo or video and include the #AnzacDay hashtag.
