The Australian War Memorial today opened its highly anticipated First World War Galleries, Australia in the Great War.

Australia in the Great War is one of the most significant First World War exhibitions in the world, drawing on the Memorial’s unique collection of First World War artefacts, technology, uniforms, medals, photographs, film, and personal items such as letters and diaries.

Dr Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial, said he was honoured to open such a significant exhibition to the Australian public.

“Australia in the Great War draws on the Memorial’s world-class collection of First World War memorabilia to tell the compelling stories of the service and sacrifice of Australian service personnel in the First World War,” said Dr Nelson.

“More than 415,000 Australians enlisted in the First World War and more than 60,000 were killed. To this day the Great War is Australia’s costliest conflict. It is important to share this story with the nation and the world.

“This exhibition is the Memorial’s major contribution to Australia’s Anzac centenary commemorations. It has been designed to inform and educate visitors for generations to come.

“Behind every one of these exhibits and displays is a story about Australians’ commitment and sacrifice in the First World War.”

Australia in the Great War presents the war chronologically, taking visitors through Gallipoli, the Western Front, Sinai and Palestine, with an added focus on Australia in 1914 and the enduring legacy of the impact of war today.

Visitors will see collections that have never before been on display, including the newly discovered Bullecourt tank components and delicate personal belongings from Pheasant Wood, along with well-known favorites such as the iconic dioramas and the HMT Ascot landing boat.

The $32 million redevelopment of the galleries received $27 million from the federal government, $2.6 million from the Memorial’s existing capital reserves and an additional $1 million donation from BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities.
