Relates to the important defensive actions undertaken by elements of the 3rd Australian Division in connection with the first major German Spring Offensive in the Morlancourt area of the Somme. The 10th and 11th Infantry Brigades bore the brunt of the confused fighting, occupying the ridge overlooking Morlancourt without artillery support and helping to stem the German advances inflicted serious casualties on the attacking German forces.
