Our Staff

The Australian War Memorial commemorates the service and sacrifice of Australian men and women who have died while serving in the wars, warlike operations, and peacekeeping missions in which Australia has participated. It is a cultural institution of international standing and is one of Australia's leading tourist attractions.

The staff and volunteers of the Australian War Memorial come from a wide range of professional, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. They undertake a diverse range of activities. Every effort is made to create an environment that enables staff to develop their talents, contribute to the best of their ability, use their creativity and initiative, and be acknowledged and respected for what they achieve.

The Memorial has approximately 300 staff members and 200 volunteers.

Our Career Paths

We are a small and specialist organisation in the Australian Public Service.  As such, we do not have the capacity or resources to participate in some of the APS wide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment programs such as Apprentice and Graduate programs.

The Memorial has adopted the Commonwealth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy to promote recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as staff and volunteers including:

• APS Special Measures for flexible arrangements recognising cultural, community, and family obligations.
• Culturally sensitive recruitment processes, including an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representative on relevant panels.
• Promoting opportunities for engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in collection development and telling stories of military service, including commissions, research projects, and program delivery.

Leave

We offer generous leave arrangements which include 4 weeks annual leave per year, flex leave and miscellaneous leave.  In conjunction with local arrangements these leave provisions allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees the flexibility to be available for personal cultural requirements.

Training

We offer all our staff training and development opportunities, including Leadership training for staff at the appropriate levels and access to the World’s largest online training database: Lynda.com  Attendance at relevant conferences and seminars is also supported and we have a studybank scheme that can offer support for students including leave to attend classes and financial reimbursement.
