Jonathan “Buck” Rogers (1920–1964) was born in Britain and received the Distinguished Service Medal serving in the Royal Navy; afterwards he joined the RAN. He died in the collision of the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne and the destroyer HMAS Voyager. Rogers was posthumously awarded the George Cross “for organising the escape of as many as possible and encouraging ... those few who could not escape ... to meet death alongside himself with dignity and honour”.
