Description

John Aitken Ballantyne was born in Inverleithan, Scotland c1884. He worked as a theatrical employee. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 10 January 1916, at Warren, New South Wales. Ballantyne was assigned to the 17th Reinforcements of 1th Field Artillery Brigade, with the rank of gunner. In April 1916, he was transferred to the 5th Field Artillery Brigade. Ballantyne embarked on HMAT Borda, 5 June 1916 with 5 Field Artillery Brigade.

In late January 1917, Ballantyne was attached to the AIF Headquarters at Tidworth, Salisbury Plains, England, with Frederick Hedges. After transferring between Depots in the United Kingdom, Ballantyne joined the 5th Field Artillery Brigade in Rouelles, France, in January 1918. After spending the early months of 1919 in hospital, Ballantyne returned to duty at the Tidworth Training Depot. He returned to Australia in October 1919.

After returning to Australia and discharge from Australian Imperial Force, Ballantyne worked for the renowned Australian theatre company, J C Williamson Ltd. as a sign writer and mechanic.

According to his service record, John Aitken Ballantyne died on 26 August 1949.
