John William Axtens was born in Sydney, New South Wales and worked as a draper before the outbreak of the First World War. He was 20 years old when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 20 June 1915 and was assigned to the 30th Infantry Battalion. John Axtens departed Sydney aboard HMAT Beltana on 9 November 1915 and returned to Australia in 1919.
