Noel Medway Loutit had been an engineering student before enlistment in 1914. He landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 as a 21 year old platoon commander in the 10th Battalion. Whilst some troops assembled at Plugges Plateau after the advance landing, he rushed on with some of his men chasing Turks through Shrapnel Valley, then up the steep hillside to the second ridge. Loutit was one of few Australians who saw the Dardanelles during the campaign. Many of the men, like Loutit, dashed up Plugges Plateau, thinking they could easily make their way to Baby 700. But they were stopped by a thin razorback the men could not walk along; instead, they had to make their way through the scrub, down into Shrapnel Valley and then up again to Russells Top, taking over an hour to go what appeared to be a short distance on the maps.

After Gallipoli, Loutit was transferred to the newly formed 50th Battalion and appointed adjutant. He later rose to command the 45th Battalion in September 1918 as Temporary Lieutenant Colonel. He was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in December 1918. During his service he was mentioned in despatches three times and awarded the Distinguished Service Order and bar. During the Second World War Loutit again enlisted serving as commander of No. 11 Central Australia Lines of Communication of C Sub area.
