Description

Arthur Henry Forslund was 18 years old when he joined the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in September 1916. He was living in Hobart and listed his occupation as a telephone operator. He listed his father, Mr Alfred Forslund of Devonport East, as his next of kin. Private Forslund embarked from Melbourne with reinforcements to the 12th Battalion on 20 October 1916. Following training in England Private Forslund joined the 12th Battalion in France 19 March 1917. He was wounded in action 19-20 September 1917 and admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. He rejoined the 12th Battalion 21 October 1917. Private Forslund was readmitted to hospital in January 1918 with a gun shot wound. Private Forslund rejoined his unit on 26 February 1918. He was wounded on 1 May 1918 when a shell burst where the unit was billeted. He sustained shrapnel wounds to the chest, left leg and right thigh, he died of his wounds the following day. Ten men were killed in the explosion and 14 wounded, four of whom later died of wounds. Private Forslund's brother Alfred James Forslund was killed in action 21 September 1917.
