Sergeant Leslie John Birkett
Description
Leslie Birkett was 21 years old when he joined the AIF on 20 August 1914. He was a letter carrier and married to Ella Gertrude Birkett. Sergeant Birkett embarked from Hobart on 20 October 1914 with 12 Battalion. He was wounded sometime between 25-28 April 1915 during the landing at Gallipoli. He rejoined the 12 Battalion at Gallipoli on 26 May 1915. He was wounded again at Gallipoli in October and evacuated to Malta. He rejoined his unit in January 1916 and in March 1916 the 12th Battalion left Alexandria for France. Sgt Birkett was killed in action on 5 May 1917 near Bullecourt.
