Description

Andrew Matzen was 21 years old when he joined the AIF on 1 June 1916. He listed his occupation as a telephone mechanic and his next of kin as his foster mother Mary Piper. Private Matzen embarked from Melbourne on 24 August 1916 with reinforcements for the 12th Battalion. Following training in England he joined the 12th Battalion in France on 2 January 1917. Private Matzen was killed in action by a shell near Ypres on 6 October 1917.
