The First World War began when Britain and Germany went to war in August 1914, and Prime Minister Andrew Fisher’s government pledged full support for Britain. The outbreak of war was greeted in Australia with great enthusiasm.
This poster set contains images from the Australian War Memorial’s Photographic Collection. They show Australia’s early activities and involvement in the war, including mobilisation of troops; the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force taking possession of German New Guinea; naval activities; the creation of the Australian Flying Corps; and the departure of troops by sea from Albany, WA.
