Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander volunteers for the AIF
The Indigenous response to World War One.
This book records of men of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage who enlisted, or attempted to enlist for service during the First World War currently total 834. These men came from all across Australia and served in a wide variety of units. Wherever possible, photographs and enlistment details are provided in this important book. Not everyone who volunteered was successful, and those who did join the AIF and who physically displayed their heritage did so despite the existence of legislation prohibiting the enlistment of men “not of substantial European origin”.
