3rd Division

Formed in Australia in February 1916, the personnel of its three infantry brigades being drawn from all six States. 9 Brigade: 33, 34, 35 and 36 Battalions - all from NSW. 10 Brigade: 37, 38 and 39 Battalions from Victoria and 40 Battalion from Tasmania. 11 Brigade: 41, 42 Battalions from Queensland, 43 battalion from South Australia and 44 Battalion from Western Australia. After an extensive period of training in England the 3rd Division saw its first active service on the Western Front in November 1916. Between June 1916 and May 1918 the Division was commanded by Major General John Monash.
