Explore the art that tells animal stories in the Memorial’s sculpture garden with renowned local artist Steven Holland.

Steven Holland was born in 1960 in Dwellingup, Western Australia. He studied at the Royal College of Art London, Canberra School of Art and the Curtin University of Technology. Steven completed his Doctor of Philosophy at the Australian National University in 2015.  He has a particular interest in animals and nature and has studied natural history illustration.  In the form of sculpture, performance and drawing he takes a critical view of the social, political and cultural construction of the lives of animals.

In 2009, Steven completed the Animals in War memorial which was a joint project between the Memorial and the RSPCA. His sculpture Circling into sleep was recently installed in the Memorial’s sculpture garden and commemorates the service of military working dogs.
