At the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917, Captain Robert Grieve 37th Battalion was awarded the Victoria Cross for his action in singlehandedly knocking out two machine guns in a concrete pill-box. Unusual for a VC award, his actions were reported by two non-commissioned officers. On temporary loan to the AWM from its permanent display at the Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance, Philip Powell will discuss Grieve's action, its context in the Messines battle and the unique story of how this medal is now at the Shrine.
