In Italy, Bowen saw the works of Fra Angelico and began to explore alternatives to the tonal value system she had earlier been taught:
I found this method still in vogue in the first art school I [had] attended in London. It is not the method which I now follow, and I could wish that I had had an architectural rather than a photographic sense developed in those early lessons. It would have saved a lot of time.
