A Netherlands East Indies (NEI) army soldier standing guard at the foot of the gangplank of the troop transport ship HMT Orcades, which was bringing Australian troops from the Middle East. Many of the troops were disembarked at Batavia where they became Blackforce and were taken as prisoners of war (POWs) by the Japanese.
