Description
NX163937 Corporal Raymond George Maher (Intelligence Section) (at left) and VX112859 Driver William John Corr (Transport Section), members of Headquarters, Milne Bay Base Sub Area, stand beside a cairn of stones positioned halfway along the north side of the Turnbull airstrip. It marks the western most point of the Japanese advance on the night of 30 August 1942 and is an authentic copy of the original notice. The cairn is in memory to members of the 7th and 18th Infantry Brigades who gave their lives in defence of Turnbull Field and marks the grave of 85 unknown Japanese Marines killed during the attack.
