KIARIVU, NEW GUINEA. 1945-09-12. LIEUTENANT GENERAL HATAZO ADACHI, COMMANDER OF THE JAPANESE XVIII ARMY, IN A LITTER CARRIED BY JAPANESE SOLDIERS AND ACCOMPANIED BY HIS STAFF OFFICERS AND ORDERLIES, ARRIVING AT THE POSITION OCCUPIED BY C COMPANY 2/7TH INFANTRY BATTALION. GENERAL ADACHI WAS ESCORTED ON FOOT FROM C COMPANY'S POSITION TO THE BATTALION HEADQUARTERS WHERE HE WAS GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS BY THE COMMANDING OFFICER, NX69 LIEUTENANT COLONEL PHILLIP KINGSMILL PARBURY DSO MC, BEFORE TRAVELLING ON TO WEWAK WHERE GENERAL ADACHI SURRENDERED HIS FORCES TO MAJOR GENERAL H.C.H. ROBERTSON.
