McLennan, William Rae (Private, b.1882 - d.1935)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 721 Private William Rae McLennan, 2nd Australian Machine Gun Battalion in France and Belgium. Collection consists of two original diaries, one maroon leather bound covering the period 1 January to 9 September 1918, France and Belgium; the other blue cardboard bound covering 10 to 27 September 1918, with additional loose diary pages in back. The diaries are very detailed and give good accounts of service activities, gas attacks (McLennan was gassed several times) and ornithological observations (he was a keen bird watcher). Also included in this collection is a biographical note related to the ornithological work of McLennan compiled by Jack Jones.
