Description

Collection relating to Matron Grace Margaret Wilson. Collection consists of a detailed letter from Wilson to her sister describing medical conditions (plus transcript of letter); photocopy of an article "Nursing has been her whole life" published in "Woman's Day and Home" magazine, June 1953 (plus transcript of article).

Biographical information: Matron Wilson enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) Reserve sometime before 1914. She became Principal Matron of 3 Australian General Hospital in Egypt, Lemnos, and France. Appointed Principal Matron of 3 Military District in 1924. Promoted Matron in Chief of the AANS and led the AIF Coronation Contingent in 1937. She retained the position as a part time appointment until 1939, when it reverted to a full-time appointment. She was sixty-two years old when she relinquished command in 1941.
