D Company, 13th Battalion, on board HMT Ulysses en route to Alexandria. All the men are wearing life jackets, probably as part of a lifeboat drill. Captain James William Albert Simpson, standing second from the left, rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded a Military Cross. He was killed in action in France on 21 January 1917.
