Description

Diaries written during 1915-1916 and 1918-1919 by 177 Private Cyril T Brayne of 2 Pioneer Battalion and 19 Battalion, AIF, who served on Gallipoli from August to December 1915 during the First World War. Pte Brayne gives an expressive account of the disarray, pilfering of dead men's shoes by Turks, sickness, poor food and conditions at Gallipoli. He was evacuated from Pope's Post to Mudros and trained in Ismailia. Private Brayne later served in France and Belgium (1916-1918) as a signaller and at telephone stations. The typescript which accompanies the diaries includes additional entries for 1917.
