History / Summary
HMAS Kookaburra was built at Sydney's Cockatoo Dockyard and commissioned in 1939, based on the British 'Net' Class of harbour defence ships. With a crew of 20, she spent most of the Second World War as a Boom Defence Vessel at Darwin, and was laid up there in 1946. In 1950, she was recommissioned and returned to Sydney, seeing limited service in general duties and oceanographic survey. The Kookaburra was finally paid off in 1958, and sold in 1965.
