Description

Banner of green silk taffeta with a gold fringe along the lower edge. The words '104 C.C.S.' appear at the top in blue letters on a silver grey ribbon. Below this is the colour patch of the unit (a blue circle in a chocolate brown square with a grey border) flanked by the words 'AITAPE' and 'WEWAK' in yellow silk letters. At the bottom are large silk representations of the ribbons of service medals awarded to members of 104 CCS: 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, British War Medal 1939-45 and Australia Service Medal. The side seams of the banner are open at the bottom, forming pockets to accept the carrying poles. Across the face are five reinforced ventilation holes to prevent the banner from acting as a sail in high winds.

History / Summary

Marching banner used by members of the 104 Casualty Clearing Station Association at Anzac Day ceremonies in Sydney between 1948 and 2003. After the 2003 ceremony, it was decided that insufficient members were still capable of marching, so the banner was retired and donated to the Australian War Memorial.
