First page in artist's sketchbook, depicting three small drawings. The top drawing, 'Ferry from Iwakuni to Korea' depicts the interior of a ferry with a number of people seated and at rest. The middle drawing, 'Detention Barracks Hiro' depicts a number of people standing and seated in a room. The bottom drawing [Seated Figures] depicts a number of men seated or crouched on the floor. During the Korean War, the 1st Commonwealth Division (divisional signallers), composed of British, New Zealand and Canadian troops, known as Kayforce, was based at Hiro, Japan, in June 1951. The Australian 3 RAR was also based at Hiro, in Japan, before its departure to Korea. The Australian RAAF no. 77 Squadron was based at Iwakuni, Japan.
