Description
Members of the 7th Reinforcements, 11th Machine Gun Company prior to boarding HMAT Ballarat (A70). The large banner in the background says 'Machine Gun Reinforcements'. A railway carriage stands on the tracks next to the group. Identified front row standing, second from right, is 501 Private (Pte) Ralph Stanley Garrett, of Toowoomba, Qld, originally of Isleworth, Middlesex, England. Pte Garrett was killed in action on 4 October 1917 in Belgium.
The unknown soldier at far left resting his hands on his knees, wears the distinctive A for Anzac device on his 1st Divison colour patch. This indicates he had already served on Gallipoli, was returned to Australia through sickness or injury, and had recovered enough to return to duty.
