Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Group portrait of E F Jackson, and two other soldiers, exact position unknown. Jackson is believed to be 1615 Private (Pte) Edward Frederick Jackson, 31st Battalion of Ponborneit, Camperdown, Vic. A dairy farmer prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 1st Reinforcements on HMAT Bakara (A 41) on 5 November 1915. Later promoted to the rank of Corporal, he was killed in action on 26 September 1917. The soldier on the left is believed to be F Howard (see DA12305). This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
