Outdoor group portrait of Group No 9 Syndicate, 4th Army Infantry School of Instruction, British Expeditionary Force, in front of a photographer's studio backdrop, hung from a damaged wall. The other British and Australian soldiers are unidentified. 1803 Sergeant Allan Montrose MacDiarmid, is second from left, third row. An accountant prior to enlistment, Acting Sgt MacDiarmid embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements, 30th Battalion, from Sydney on HMAT Berrima (A35) on 17 December 1915. He later transferred to the 45th Battalion reaching the rank of Lieutenant (Lt). On 5 April 1918 Lt MacDiarmid was killed in action in France, aged 27.
