Studio portrait of 1226 Driver (Dvr) Sydney Whitaker Holmes, 7th Company Australian Army Service Corps, of Five Dock, NSW. A member of the Citizens Military Forces and a carpenter before enlisting in September 1914, Dvr Holmes left Australia in December 1914 as part of the 4th Infantry Brigade Team for service in the Middle East and served on Gallipoli. He contracted enteric fever in Egypt and was admitted to hospital, but died three weeks later on 29 January 1916, age 22.
