Description

Studio portrait of 4546 Private (Pte) Sidney George Porter, 3rd Battalion, of Newport, NSW. A labourer prior to enlistment, Pte Porter embarked with the 14th Reinforcements from Sydney on RMS Osterley on 15 January 1916. After transferring to the 53rd Battalion, and with a new service number 4546A, was killed in action in Belgium at Polygon Wood on 24 September 1917, aged 24. Pte Sidney Porter had four brothers who also served. 1013 Pte William James Porter, 13th Battalion, was killed in action on Hill 60 at Gallipoli on 22 August 1915 and 4547 Pte Albert Edward Porter, 3rd Battalion, was killed in action near Pozieres on 22 July 1916. 3454 Sergeant Robert Daniel Porter MM, 1st Battalion, and 4544 Private Carl Horwood Porter, 3rd Battalion, survived the war. Privates Albert and Carl Porter had enlisted in the 3rd Battalion with Pte Sidney Porter and embarked with him on the same ship. Pte Carl Porter had four sons who served in the Second World War, one of whom was 412681 Flying Officer Sydney Larner Porter, 23 Squadron, RAAF, who was accidentally killed flying off the coast of Queensland near Horne Island on 4 May 1944.
