Queen Elizabeth
Description
Sketch on a leaf torn from a small sketchpad, depicting the Queen Elizabeth and other vessels just before the artist landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25 April 1915. The artist notes that this is one of two sketches on this leaf that were made just before he landed.
The HMS Queen Elizabeth was the only modern battleship to participate in the First World War. While in the Mediterranean undergoing testing she was deployed to the Dardanelles to assist with the Allied campaign against the Ottoman Empire. She lead the first line of British battleships in the battle of 18 March 1915, and went on to be the flagship for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the military invasion of the Gallipoli on 25 April.
