Description
RAN guided missile destroyer HMAS Brisbane (II) D41 (background), and USS Edson DD-946 (foreground), provide naval gunfire support for ground troops near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). A third ship, USS Brinkley Bass DD-887 (from which the photograph was taken), had an equipment malfunction and could not provide accurate gunfire. HMAS Brisbane was deployed to relieve USS Brinkley Bass for the remainder of the mission. The Brinkley Bass then departed for repairs at Subic Bay Naval Base in The Philippines. The Brisbane was on its second and last deployment serving with the US Seventh Fleet on the gunline off the coast of Vietnam.
