Collection relating to the Second World War experience of Edward ‘Ted’ Flowers, English evacuee, England, at sea and Australia, 1940.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one diary of Edward ‘Ted’ Flowers, containing entries dated between 5 August and 17 October 1940. This diary records Ted Flowers’ experiences of travelling from England to Australia as a 14-year-old evacuee on the troopship ‘MS Batory’ under the Children’s Overseas Reception Board Scheme. In his diary, Ted writes about his embarkation, daily routines on the ship, interacting with soldiers, travelling in a large convoy, attending lessons, playing games, taking part in a ‘crossing the line’ ceremony, seeing concerts, going ashore while in port, sightseeing, participating in boxing matches, being on sentry duty, and arriving in Australia. This diary also contains notes on mathematics, and a draft of a letter.
