Description

PhD thesis based on research into First World War aerial photography using international archives including the Memorial's Research Centre. Stichelbaut's thesis is divided into five parts, (1) Provides a brief history of aerial photography and the development of aerial photography in Belgium during World War One; (2) Provides an overview of the major aerial photography archives; (3) Describes the sources used, the process of assigning map coordinates to the aerial photographs, designing a database to record the available information gained from the aerial photographs and the process of digitising the visible features on the aerial photographs; (4) Focuses on the interpretation of the aerial photographs noting opportunities and potential problems; (5) A set of aerial photographs are used to illustrate the features visible in the 30km between Nieuwpoort and Houthulst in the region of West Flanders. As well as aerial photographs the thesis includes tables, charts, plans, maps, anaglyph images, schematic images and photographs. 434 pages.
