Description

Collection of three memoirs concerning Coastwatchers. Includes a 6 page typed memoir by NX41042 Sergeant Lionel Veale, M Special Unit Infantry Battalion, titled 'Coastwatchers: the part they played when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour.' In it Veale briefly describes the positions of many of the Coastwatchers when the Japanese invaded New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. He also outlines the Coastwatchers' role and how they managed to report Japanese military movements. The manuscript also includes a 4 page article on the Coastwatchers by Lieutenant Commander Eric Feldt, HMAS Moreton, OBE, RAN. The article was first published in the 1946 edition of 'As you were! : a cavalcade of events with the Australian services from 1788 to 1946.' The third memoir is again by NX41042 Sergeant Lionel Veale, 'A Coastwatcher Mission off the coast of Papua.' In this 5 page typed memoir, Veale describes his experience serving with the 1st Independent Company and as a Coastwatcher. Includes maps and photographs.
