Description

Informal outdoor portrait of Corporal Reginald Gordon Leeder, 13th Battalion, taken after kit inspection on 27 February 1915 at Aerodrome Camp in Heliopolis. The photograph was taken by Pte L Thomas. The reverse of the photograph reads: "With the fondest of love to my darling wife Renie, from Reg". Leeder had served with the 1st Australian Infantry and was a tram conductor before the war broke out. His unit embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 22 December 1914. He served at Gallipoli and by the middle of 1916 was fighting on the Western Front in France. He was tried by Field General Court Martial twice in 1917, reduced to the rank of Private (Pte) and admitted to No 1 Military Prison in Rouen on 20 June 1917. His sentence, however, was eventually suspended and he was released on 27 May 1918 to rejoin his battalion in the field. Pte Leeder was killed in action on 4 July 1918. He has no known grave.
