Description

Informal portrait of five Australians aboard HMAT Ormonde. They are identified as back row left to right: Lawson, Pollock and Edwards and front row: Witaker and Addison. The five formed part of a small group of Australians who had qualified as pilots privately and with Commonwealh Government support were allowed to travel to Egypt and enlist in the RAF. After cadet training they were commissioned into the RAF and most were posted to local units such as 23 Squadron RAF. Some flew in operations against the Turks in late 1918 and most were still on active service well into 1919.
