Description
Gallipoli landscape with figure diving into the water. the lifeless figure seems to be submerged in murky water. Nolan stated in an interview (13 April 1978) that the lifeless floating figures in the 'Gallipoli' series relate to the drowning in 1945 of his own brother.
This work was presented by Sidney Nolan, along with 251 other Nolan's from the 'Gallipoli' series, in memory of the artist's brother Raymond who drowned in 1945 on his return from military service at the end of the Second World War.
