Studio portrait of 5728 Private (Pte) Edward John Mayell, 48th Battalion. A motor mechanic from Millicent, SA prior to enlistment, Pte Mayell embarked with the 18th Reinforcements, 10th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Barambah on 27 June 1916. Later transferring to the 48th Battalion, he was reported as missing in action. A subsequent court of enquiry determined that he had been killed in action on 11 April 1917 at Bullecourt, France, aged 22. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
