History / Summary

Corporal Harold Wake Andrews enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) on 20 May 1940. He served as a Fitter IIE with the ground crew of 460 Squadron in England. He worked on aircraft such as Wellingtons, Halifaxes, and Lancasters, including “G for George”. In October 1944, Corporal Andrews was declared to be medically unfit. He returned to Australia via Canada and the United States. In Adelaide, he had surgery for a gastric ulcer, which was complicated by abdominal abscesses. Upon his discharge on 16 April 1945, Corporal Andrews was attached to 7 RAAF Hospital.
