Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX26559 Private Gwyn Macgregor Hanford, 2/3 Pioneer Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Australia, 1940-1941.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one diary of Private Gwyn Macgregor Hanford, containing entries dated between 19 June 1940 and 12 March 1941. It covers the period of his enlistment and training in Australia. In his diary, Private Hanford writes about his enlistment, training drills, parades, lectures, spending time at home with his family, playing golf, learning about life in camp, bayonet and rifle practice, doing guard duty, route marches, doing mess duties, being on home leave, moving to a different camp, and leisure activities.

History / Summary

Private Gwyn Macgregor Hanford enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 19 June 1940. After a period of training, he served with 2/3 Pioneer Battalion in Australia, the Middle East and New Guinea. Private Hanford died on 1 July 1944 in Queensland. He is buried at Atherton War Cemetery, Queensland.
