Dismounted pattern breeches : Australian Army
Pair of Australian army early dismounted pattern khaki/green wool twill breeches. Three darts around the bottom of each leg shape the knee, which is sewn to a self fabric band below the knee. The band is lined with khaki cotton. A single green cotton tape is attached to each band and threads through a vertical slit on the rear reaction of the band to secure the bottom of the leg in position. Black painted metal buttons stamped with 'Commonwealth' and a crown are sewn around the outside of the waist to secure braces (one button missing). Further buttons secure the fly, which is lined with khaki cotton, as is the waist. A single khaki cotton pocket is set into the right front waist.
This is an example of the type of early pattern infantry breeches worn by Australian soldiers in the First World War. Later patterns replaced the simple knee ties with lace fastenings.
