Description
Collection relating to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) service of F182493 Major Susan Lee Felsche, Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, 1993.
Wallet 1 of 1 - consists of letters written by Felsche before and during her deployment to the Western Sahara and documents related to her death in a plane crash near Awsard on 21 June 1993.
Folder 1 of 2 - Consists of 15 letters Felsche sent to her husband, Major Klaus Felsche, between 6 May and 17 June 1993 during her preparations for and deployment to the Western Sahara. Felsche writes of her training prior to departure, her journey to the Western Sahara, and the weather, accommodation and living conditions in Laayoune. Felsche also remarks on her work as a medical officer in MINURSO, the scarcity of female personnel serving with the United Nations, interactions and relations with the Moroccans, leave in Las Palmas, and language barriers creating difficulties in her working environment. Many of the letters are written over multiple days. The final letter, composed between 17 and 20 June, discusses Felsche being posted to Awsard for a few weeks. She writes of her impressions of the town, the medical facilities, of flying in small aircraft.
Folder 2 of 2 - Consists of a eulogy, letters of condolence from United Nations and military officials, and newspaper reports following Felsche's death. The folder also includes an Australian briefing map of the Western Sahara.
