Description

Mr George Kendall worked as a projectionist at the Radio Theatre, Oatley. He describes his duties at the theatre, including cleaning the theatre after patrons viewed newsreels on Belsen and were ill. He comments that Australians were naive at the time, not aware of the callousness of the world. He depicts the American soldiers as well presented, happy, "million medals" and "overpaid, oversexed and over here". It was very hard for the local troops to complete with them, with rationing. The American films screened were mostly propaganda films, there were very few Australian films. Ken G Hall was making Movietone news. It cost 2/6d (25c) or 1/3d (13c) to go to the movies, and 6d (5c) for children. The cinema was a very popular entertainment as there was little else, except dances.
