Description

The British destroyer HMS Defender sinking seven miles north of the Egyptian coastal town of Sidi Barrani. The ship had been severely damaged by a bomb dropped by a German aircraft while evacuating troops from Tobruk to Alexandria. The troops and the crew of the ship were safely taken aboard the Australian destroyer HMAS Vendetta. At right, two longboats carrying the last of the ship's crew make their way around the hull of the stricken vessel towards HMAS Vendetta (not in view).
