Description
Angle airfield near Pembroke Dock, Wales. 1943-05-29. A Sunderland aircraft belonging to No. 461 Squadron RAAF of Coastal Command was extensively damaged in taking off after alighting to rescue a crew in a dinghy. The captain, 400841 Flying Officer G. O. Singleton of St Kilda, Vic, knowing that it would be suicide to attempt a sea landing made history by bringing the giant flying boat down successfully on an aerodrome on its return. The damage to the hull caused by the heavy swell in taking off was a hole about seven feet long by four feet wide.
