Description

An amazing night picture taken by a Sunderland aircraft of No. 201 Squadron RAF during an attack on U-boat U-955. The three large balls of light are flares dropped by the Sunderland to light the U-boat before the attack. The outline of the enemy craft can be seen in the swirling foam (bottom left). As the captain of the Sunderland, 1139324 Flying Officer Leslie Harold Baveystock DFC DFM, RAFVR, sighted the U-boat it crash-dived and the Sunderland patiently patrolled the area until the U-boat surfaced.
